No public fireworks are listed in Winchester for New Year's Eve. The panto plays 31 December, Hillier's light trail and the Steam Illuminations party train runs.

No public New Year’s Eve fireworks display is listed in Winchester for 2026. The city’s big display is the Round Table’s bonfire night on 7 November, and none of the organisers we check (the city council, Winchester BID, the Cathedral, the Theatre Royal and The Arc) has announced anything for the night of 31 December. What is confirmed so far is daytime panto, a light trail and a party train.

The quick answer

  • Fireworks: none listed in Winchester. Visit Winchester’s New Year’s Eve guide still describes last year and lists no display.
  • Panto on 31 December: Sleeping Beauty at the Theatre Royal at 11am (from £17) and 2.30pm (from £22). No evening show that day.
  • Light trail: Light Up at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is open on 31 December and 1 January, slots 4.30pm to 8pm.
  • Party train: the Watercress Line’s Steam Illuminations runs its “Party Anthems” edition from 29 December to 2 January, £37 a seat.
  • Getting home: park and ride does not run on New Year’s Day, a public holiday.

Is there a New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Winchester?

Not that anyone has announced. Winchester BID’s key dates for 2026 ends with the Christmas market on 22 December, and the Cathedral’s what’s on list goes from Britten’s Ceremony of Carols on Christmas Eve to a Viennese Christmas concert on 2 January, with nothing on 31 December. Visit Winchester’s New Year’s Eve page is still headed “Start 2026 in Winchester” and lists restaurant menus and parties for last year, with no fireworks. If a display is announced we will add it here.

Sleeping Beauty on New Year’s Eve

The Theatre Royal’s panto has two shows on Thursday 31 December, at 11am (an Off-Peak show, tickets from £17) and 2.30pm (a Peak show, from £22), and two on New Year’s Day, at 2.30pm and 7pm. The 2.30pm show on 1 January is signed and relaxed, with a touch tour at 1.30pm (Theatre Royal Winchester). The show runs about two hours with the interval. Every price band and the dark days are on our panto page.

Light Up at Hillier Gardens on 31 December

The Hillier Gardens light trail is open every night from 15 December to Friday 1 January, except Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so it runs on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. You book a 15-minute arrival slot between 4.30pm and 8pm (Hampshire County Council). Adults pay £22 to £27 and children £14 to £19 depending on the night, and parking is free (Light Up Trails). It is an early evening out rather than a midnight one: the last slot is 8pm.

Steam Illuminations: the Party Anthems trains

From 29 December to 2 January the Watercress Line’s illuminated steam train swaps its Christmas songs for a “Party Anthems” soundtrack, “iconic hits from the 60s to today”, synced to an LED wristband every passenger keeps. Trains leave Alresford or Alton and come back to the same station, and the trip takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Seats are £37, First Class £47, and a compartment for up to six £265; under-2s ride free on a lap (Watercress Line).

Getting home

The city council’s park and ride runs from 6.25am to 7.30pm on weekdays and 7am to 6.30pm on Saturdays, and no buses run on Sundays or public holidays (Winchester City Council). New Year’s Eve 2026 is a Thursday, so the last buses leave the town centre at about 7.30pm, and there are none on New Year’s Day. Car parks and their charges are on our parking in Winchester page, and late trains are on our Christmas train times page once South Western Railway publishes them. Check our roadworks and travel page before you set off.

Still to be announced

  • Pub and restaurant New Year’s Eve menus and parties: none of last year’s venues has a 2026 listing on Visit Winchester yet. We will add the ones that publish prices.
  • Any fireworks in Winchester or the villages.
  • South Western Railway’s New Year’s Eve late trains.

This page will be updated in December.
