Winchester train times to London: 59 mins, £6,728 season

Winchester sits on South Western Railway’s Waterloo to Weymouth main line, about 60 miles out, and that is the single biggest reason houses here cost what they do. The useful facts are that the fastest trains do the run in 59 minutes, that they go to London Waterloo and nowhere else in London directly, and that a year of commuting costs £6,728 before you set foot on the Underground.

The times below come from the National Rail timetable for Tuesday 11 August 2026, checked on 10 August 2026. Always confirm on the day: engineering work rewrites weekends, and the M3 junction 9 rebuild has pushed extra traffic onto the railway.

How long the journey actually takes

There is no single answer, because Winchester gets both semi-fast and stopping services. Across the day the direct trains we observed ranged from 59 minutes to about 1 hour 15, and the pattern is consistent:

Trainline advertises a fastest journey of 56 minutes and around 118 trains a day on the route. We did not see a 56 minute run in the timetable we checked, so treat an hour as the realistic planning figure and 59 minutes as the best case.

The other thing the table shows is that the peak is slower than the shoulder. The 06:48 and the 10:48 both do 59 minutes; the 08:19, right in the commuter crush, takes seven minutes longer. If your start time is flexible, leaving before 07:00 or after 09:30 buys back time as well as money.

First and last trains

• First train to London: 05:19, arriving Waterloo 06:34.
• Last direct train to London: 22:23, arriving 23:29. There is a 23:24 departure after that, but it involves three changes and does not reach Waterloo until 02:02, so in practice 22:23 is the last useful train out.
• Last train home from Waterloo: 23:35, arriving Winchester 00:52. The one before it is the 23:05, arriving 00:10.

That last-train-home time is the number worth writing down. If you are booking theatre tickets, the 23:35 gives you a comfortable margin; the 23:05 does not.

An annual season from Winchester to London Terminals costs £6,728, or £645.90 a month and £168.20 a week. The version that includes Travelcard Zones 1 to 6, so you can use the Tube and buses at both ends, costs £7,884 a year, £756.90 a month or £197.10 a week (Trainline season tickets).

The gap is £1,156 a year. Whether it is worth paying depends on one question: how far your office is from Waterloo. If you walk or take one short bus, contactless pay as you go on the London leg will usually come to less than £1,156 over a working year. Winchester station is managed by South Western Railway and sits on Station Road, a ten minute walk downhill from the High Street.

Going the other way

London is not the only reason to use the station. Southampton Central is 15 to 22 minutes away on the same line, which makes the airport, the docks and the city’s shops an easy trip without the M3. Basingstoke is about 15 to 17 minutes north, and changing there opens up the Reading and Cross Country services.
