Pubs at Cheriton and Southwick and the kitchen at Sparsholt's primary school were rated 1 in late September. Every new Winchester district rating, and what each 1 was for.
Three food premises in the Winchester district were rated 1 for food hygiene after inspections in late September. Two are pubs, at Cheriton and Southwick. The third is the kitchen at Sparsholt CofE Primary School.
A 1 means “major improvement necessary”. It is the second lowest score on the scale.
None of the three was on the register when we published our September roundup on 2 October. Ratings below 5 are published three to five weeks after the inspection, to leave time for an appeal, so the lower scores arrive late. On 2 October the register held 59 ratings dated September. It now holds 90.
The figures are from the Food Standards Agency ratings register, downloaded this morning. It has no ratings dated October yet.
The three rated 1
The register breaks every rating into three parts: how food is handled, the condition of the building, and how food safety is managed. All three premises were marked “major improvement necessary” on management.
- The Flower Pots Inn, Brandy Mount, Cheriton, about seven miles east of Winchester. Inspected 18 September. Food handling: improvement necessary. Building: generally satisfactory. Management: major improvement necessary.
- Golden Lion, High Street, Southwick, about 15 miles south-east of Winchester. Inspected 17 September. Food handling: generally satisfactory. Building: improvement necessary. Management: major improvement necessary.
- Sparsholt CofE Primary School, Woodman Lane, Sparsholt, about three miles west of Winchester. Inspected 30 September. Food handling: improvement necessary. Building: very good. Management: major improvement necessary.
The register does not say what the inspectors found, only the scores. None of the three has published a right to reply on it.
Every business can appeal a rating within 21 days, ask for a re-inspection once it has made improvements, and post a right to reply on its register page.

How the district compares
Winchester City Council’s register now lists 1,221 premises. Of the 1,090 with a rating from 0 to 5, 965 are rated 5, which is 88.5%. That is still the second highest share of seven neighbouring councils, behind Havant on 90.7% and just ahead of Test Valley on 88.0%.
Winchester’s full breakdown is 965 rated 5, 96 rated 4, 19 rated 3, 3 rated 2 and 7 rated 1. None is rated 0. A further 97 premises are waiting for a first inspection and 34 are exempt.
What it means for you
- Check the date. Each link above goes to the premises’ own register page, with the date of its last inspection. A rating can change after a re-inspection.
- Read the breakdown. At Sparsholt the building was marked very good; the problems recorded were food handling and management.
- Parents at Sparsholt CofE Primary can ask the school what has changed since 30 September, and whether a re-inspection has been requested.
- Expect October’s lows in November. The register has no October ratings yet, and the lower scores will again arrive weeks after the 5s.
