The Cathedral's free Lantern Parade is Monday 23 November: gather 5.30pm, parade 6.30pm up the High Street. Theme, route, prize categories and getting home.
Winchester Cathedral’s Family Lantern Parade is on Monday 23 November 2026. Families gather inside the Cathedral with their lanterns from 5.30pm, the parade leaves the Great West Doors at 6.30pm, loops up the High Street to the Buttercross and back, and the evening closes at 7.15pm. It is free. This year’s theme is Angel’s Message (Winchester Cathedral).
The quick answer
- When: Monday 23 November 2026, 5.30pm to 7.15pm. The parade itself sets off at 6.30pm.
- Where: starts and ends at Winchester Cathedral, SO23 9LS, with the route up the High Street.
- Cost: free. Registering through the Cathedral’s “book now” button is optional, but a booked place guarantees you entry if the nave fills up.
- Theme: Angel’s Message, with three prizes judged by the Dean.
- Lanterns: battery candles only, no live flames.
The timetable
All times are the Cathedral’s own, from its Lantern Parade page:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| From 5.30pm | Gather inside the Cathedral with your lanterns |
| From 5.45pm | Carol singing |
| From 6pm | The Dean, the Very Reverend Chris Palmer, judges the lanterns |
| From 6.15pm | Group photo of all the lanterns |
| 6.30pm | The parade leaves through the Great West Doors |
| From about 7pm | Closing speech and winners announced |
| 7.15pm | Event closes |
The Cathedral says the 7pm prize-giving depends on how long the parade takes.
Do you need to book?
No, but it helps. The Cathedral asks families to register through the “book now” button on its event page so it can plan for numbers, and says registering is not essential. The catch: if the Cathedral reaches its maximum capacity, people without a booking may be asked to wait outside until the parade starts at 6.30pm. A booked place guarantees entry. You can also book on 01962 857 275 or at the box office inside the Cathedral.
The route
The Cathedral’s description of the route: the parade heads out of the Close, turns left at Pret A Manger and goes up the High Street to the Buttercross, then bears left through the passage between L’Occitane En Provence and Kneaded, crosses the Cathedral grounds on the diagonal and finishes outside the West Front.
The Cathedral has not said whether the High Street will be closed to traffic, and no traffic order for the parade had been published when we checked on 19 October. Our roadworks and travel page carries any closures in the city that week.
Making a lantern and the prizes
The Cathedral encourages families to make their own lantern at home from materials that would otherwise be thrown away. Only battery-operated candles may go inside: no live flames. The Dean picks three winners:
- Best Small Lantern, under 1 metre.
- Best Large Lantern, over 1 metre.
- Best Community Lantern, for an organisation, group, school, club or business.
Look out for the Dean during judging from 6pm and tell him what inspired your lantern, the Cathedral says. The parade is sponsored by the Winchester law firm Trethowans.
The Christmas market that evening
The Cathedral Christmas Market opens on Friday 20 November, so it is running on parade night, but on a Monday the chalets close at 6pm (Winchester Cathedral). Arrive early if you want to browse before you gather. The Christmas lights in the city centre are switched on four days earlier, on Thursday 19 November: see our switch-on page.
Getting there and home
- Park and ride: on weekdays the last buses leave the town centre at around 7.30pm, Winchester City Council says, so with a 7.15pm finish you will need to head straight for the stop (park and ride FAQs).
- Car parks: new city council parking charges apply from 1 November. Our parking in Winchester page has the tariffs and the closest car parks to the Close.
- Train: see our train times page for evening services.
Also at the Cathedral this season
- Advent Procession, Saturday 28 November, 6.30pm, free, no booking.
- The Gift by Luxmuralis, the light and sound show inside the Cathedral, 14 to 19 December: see our light show page.
- Carol services, 20 and 23 December at 7pm: see our Christmas services page.
Still to be confirmed
- Any road closure for the parade route. This page will be updated if one is published.
